2024 Women's T20 World Cup: Introduction of Smart Replay System
The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, commencing on October 3 in the UAE, marks a significant advancement in cricket technology with the introduction of the Smart Replay System. This system, previously utilized in the Hundred and IPL 2024, will enhance decision-making during matches.
The ICC announced that each game will feature a minimum of 28 cameras, along with various analytical and visual tools. The Decision Review System (DRS) will be fully operational, enabling the TV umpire to access synchronized multi-angle footage through Hawk-Eye technology for accurate reviews.
Under the Smart Replay System, the TV umpire will work closely with two Hawk-Eye operators located in the same room, receiving real-time visuals from eight high-speed cameras positioned around the ground. This direct connection eliminates the need for the TV broadcast director, granting the umpire access to a broader array of visuals, including split-screen images.
In stumping situations, the TV umpire can request split-screen footage from the Hawk-Eye operators. If a gap is evident when the ball passes the bat, the umpire will check the side-on replay for stumping without needing to refer to UltraEdge for a caught-behind review. Only if there’s uncertainty regarding the gap will the UltraEdge technology be employed.
For stumpings, the Smart Replay System will provide the umpire with tri-vision—combining side-on and front-on footage into a single view. This approach offers a clearer perspective on the removal of bails. Unlike previous broadcasts that used slower Stump Cam footage, the Hawk-Eye system captures action at approximately 300 frames per second, delivering more precise imagery for decision-making.
Similar to the last T20 World Cup, this tournament will feature an all-female panel of umpires and match officials, highlighting the ongoing commitment to gender equality in cricket.
